ABSTRACT

Social media has been well-established in health-related purposes, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Preliminary reviews have summarized social media uses for a distinctive health purpose such as health interventions, health campaigns, medical education, and disease outbreak surveillance. The most recent thorough review of social media uses for health purposes, however, was conducted in 2013. A systematic review that covers various health purposes is needed to reveal the new usages and research gaps that emerge in recent years. This study aimed to provide a systematic review of social media uses for health purposes that have been identified in previous studies. The researchers searched for peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2010 and 2020 in.10 databases covering medicine, public health, and social science. After classifying the articles in terms of publication year, journal area, country, method, social media platform, and social media use for health purposes, the researchers provided a review of social media use for health purposes identified in these articles. This study summarized 7 social media uses for various health purposes by health organizations, health researchers and practitioners, and the public. Social media can be used for various health purposes. Several new usages have emerged since 2013 including advancing health research and practice, social mobilization, and facilitating offline health-related services and events. Research gaps exist regarding advancing strategic use of social media based on audience segmentation, understanding the impact of health identity development, and addressing privacy concerns and evaluating the impact of social media in health interventions. © 2023 Author(s).

ABSTRACT

Pakistan is going through a period of transition after Covid-19 pandemic situation which created a dire need to use computer as a tool and other online resources in the classrooms. To contribute to this situation, the present study investigated the effects of using computer as a tool and Penzu software as online source for language instructions. The study used experimental design and conducted a classroom experiment of 40 higher secondary school students ( 20 experimental & 20 in control group) through pre/post-tests over different period of time to examine development in students' writing skills. On post-test-I, it was observed that students in the control group showed sudden rise in the development of writing skills compared to experimental group. But, on post-test-II and III, students in the experimental group showed consistency in the development in writing skills while control group could not maintain their consistency of development in writings. Hence, findings of the study revealed that using computer as a tool for instructions and Penzu as online resource to conduct writing activities proved more useful in improving students' writing skills compared to the students in the control group. Finally, findings also revealed that students became more independent in self-corrections in the experimental group and continued to expand their learning outside the classroom while control group was dependent on teacher and could only find time in the classroom for corrective feedback which limited students' learning to their classroom. In addition to this, the study recommends that further computer applications and other online resources can be more useful in language instructions apart from teaching writing skills. Besides, findings of this study have significant theoretical and practical implications pertaining to EFL teachers' professional development, teaching skills and students' learning environment.

ABSTRACT

Pyrolysis of medical waste components combined via a novel systematic combination approach (sequentially binary, ternary, and quaternary copyrolysis) was conducted at 400°C to investigate the synergy between medical waste components in improving chemical characteristics and yields of pyrolytic oil. Pyrolysis of hydrocarbon-polymer-containing materials such as medical gloves and rubber bands produced more than 30% of liquid products with substantial compositions of saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon polymers. On the other hand, moisture- and carbonyl-rich pyrolytic liquid products with low selectivity were obtained from pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass waste such as HVS paper (houtvrij schrijfpapier, meaning "writing paper made from wood pulp”) and garden waste. Binary copyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass and medical gloves exhibited improvement on pyrolytic liquid yield and selectivity toward saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon polymers due to hydrogen donor as the medical glove fraction became dominant. The addition of rubber band to the mixture of HVS paper and medical face masks enhanced the pyrolytic liquid yield. The pyrolysis of the mixture of HVS paper, medical face masks, medical gloves, and either rubber bands or cotton fabrics with mixture ratio of 60:20:10:10 yielded the most optimum pyrolytic liquid yield with significant distribution of alkanes in the pyrolytic liquid products. © 2023 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

ABSTRACT

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare immune-mediated neuropathy causing destruction of the peripheral nervous system, with molecular mimicry playing a major role in its pathophysiology. Despite its rarity, it is considered the most common cause of acute flaccid neuromuscular paralysis in the United States. Although diagnosing GBS depends on the clinical presentation of the patient, cerebrospinal fluid sampling, nerve conduction studies, electromyography, magnetic resonance imaging, and ganglioside antibody screening can be used to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other differentials. Here, we report a rare case of GBS as a postoperative complication after a successful gastrojejunostomy to excise an adenocarcinoma in the second part of the duodenum. Such a complication is rare and not fully understood yet.

ABSTRACT

This study examines the spatial effects of public places during the pandemic, as well as individual perceptions of public spaces. In Malaysia, incidences of COVID-19 had a significant impact on people's movement. During the epidemic, the level of public safety and the ability to interact with individuals on the pedestrian walkway has been a serious worry. The concept of conducting research to determine tendencies and public perceptions regarding public usage during the Movement Control Order was sparked by the increased number of Covid-19 cases in Malaysia. The government sequentially limited social interaction in public settings. The scope of the study is the design of the public space components in pedestrian walkway zones in commercial areas. The researchers used both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, including observation and questionnaire surveys. The data was gathered using probability and random sampling, with a sample size of 104 respondents. Limited distance and safety efficacy were found in studies. According to the findings, distance and safety have a considerable impact on the preferences and demands of public users. The respondents in this survey were also dissatisfied with the quality and width of the pedestrian walkway. Full transit space, semi-transit space, and limited transit space have all been presented as options for the conceptual design. Many agencies concerned with the design of public areas will find the study informative. © 2022 by MIP.

ABSTRACT

Although tourist homestay experience has been commonly recognized as an important criterion for community-based and eco-friendly destination loyalty, not much is known about the measurement of its service experience. A scientific inquiry into the tourist experience will be an essential differentiation tool for sustainable competitive advantage in this alternative hospitality sector. Our research aims to develop a measure of homestay service experience and to use this measure to investigate the influence of homestay service experience on tourists’ satisfaction and behavioral intentions. Specifically, the HomeServE inventory is established through qualitative and quantitative processes. Focus group interviews and questionnaire survey techniques were employed. A total of 866 usable questionnaires were obtained from the nationwide survey. Reliability and validity analyses were done on the measurement items. Measurement and relationship analyses were done using the confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling. Eight dimensions (32 items) of homestay service experience were identified (i.e., Culture, Guiding Service, Food and Beverage, Environment, Cleanliness, Accommodation, Services, and Accessibility). The measurement and model fit indices were found to be satisfactory. This newly found multi-dimensional construct of tourist service experience is in line with tourist-oriented service management. It was found that service experience has a direct positive effect on tourists’ satisfaction. Managerial and research implications of the measurement were discussed for more effective tourist experience management. © 2022, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

A global pandemic of covid-19 has hastened the growth of online shopping or E-commerce. Nowadays, E-commerce transactions provide various products from luxury goods and services to everyday necessities. While the popularity of online shopping has grown fast, there are several common issues that shoppers experience. Common problems that customers experienced are failed delivery, missing parcels and even the criminal case. Malaysia has introduced Pos Laju Ezi Box Kiosk, but still contemporary Kiosk type approach for the delivery system has some problems such as high initial installation cost, the expense of management system and especially security weaknesses in the wireless communication. To overcome the aforementioned problems, this paper proposes a low-cost smart parcel box system that will be installed at individual homes with enhanced security. This system used Arduino Mega 2560 to control all the processes of the developed system. The system will be initiated when couriers send the parcel’s tracking number as a message to the user via applications to get the password. For security purpose, password will be provided once the courier’s message is the same as the message specified by the user. Couriers then can enter the password provided and insert the parcel into the smart parcel box. The proposed lowcost smart parcel box system ensures that parcels are delivered safely and securely to the customer’s door. © The 2022 International Conference on Artificial Life and Robotics (ICAROB2022).

ABSTRACT

Religious values are contemporary issues associated with employees’ behavior in organizations, especially from the Islamic human resource (HR) management view. To address this issue, this study analyzed the influence of Islamic work values on engagement, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and in-role performance of Muslim employees. Considering the potential spread of COVID-19, primary data was collected by distributing online questionnaire via emails and social media to 283 respondents in Makassar City, Indonesia, who fulfilled the predetermined sampling criterion. PLS-SEM was employed to check the measurement and structural models of the SmartPLS 3.0 program. It was revealed that Islamic work values have a significant influence on engagement and job satisfaction and in contrast, insignificant on organizational commitment and employee in-role performance. In addition, a significant interrelationship between the 4 endogenous variables was confirmed, namely engagement, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and in-role performance. Furthermore, it was found that several constructs mediate the correlation between Islamic values and in-role performance. The findings are essential to provide theoretical enrichment for future studies pertaining to the measured Islamic values and HR behavior. Practically, managers are capable to devise and select the most appropriate HR strategies for Muslim employee in a particular organization. © Munawir Nasir Hamzah, Muhammad Ashoer, Nasir Hamzah, 2021

ABSTRACT

Learning analytics is an emerging technique of analysing student participation and engagement. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has significantly increased the role of learning management systems (LMSs). LMSs previously only complemented face-to-face teaching, something which has not been possible between 2019 to 2020. To date, the existing body of literature on LMSs has not analysed learning in the context of the pandemic, where an LMS serves as the only interface between students and instructors. Consequently, productive results will remain elusive if the key factors that contribute towards engaging students in learning are not first identified. Therefore, this study aimed to perform an extensive literature review with which to design and develop a student engagement model for holistic involvement in an LMS. The required data was collected from an LMS that is currently utilised by a local Malaysian university. The model was validated by a panel of experts as well as discussions with students. It is our hope that the result of this study will help other institutions of higher learning determine factors of low engagement in their respective LMSs.

ABSTRACT

The outbreak of a neurological disorder was first discovered as a new coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in Wuhan, China. The infection spread rapidly in China and throughout the world, including Malaysia. Malaysia recorded its initial case on 25 January 2020 with intensifying numbers since March 2020. Due to this uncertain circumstance, Malaysia has introduced the Movement Control Order (MCO) with the main aim of isolating the source of the COVID-19 outbreak, which was effective from 18 March 2020. The restriction has observed fewer vehicles on the road with industrial and commercial activities being suspended. The objective of the study is to quantify the effects of MCO to food waste generation in town and district areas of Klang Valley, Malaysia. Food waste generation data was derived from the Project Delivery Department, KDEB Waste Management on a daily basis before (19 February-17 March 2020) and during the MCO (18 March-14 April 2020) at 12 local authorities in Selangor, Malaysia. The data was obtained with the limitation of assumption that there is no waste compositional analysis to be conducted in 2020. Despite the stay-at-home order, food waste data showed a descriptive reduction of up to 15.1% during the MCO. Statistical analysis of food waste generation from one-way variance has shown that municipal and district local authorities recorded a significant reduction (p < 0.50) during the MCO. The food waste reduction during the MCO will deliver as the evidence-based results to push the need for policies in Malaysia as per the goals outlined in Sustainable Development Goals of global food loss and waste.
